Beginner’s Guide to Growing Microgreens:Part 1

Beginner’s Guide to Growing Microgreens

Part 1: What You Need to Start Growing Microgreens

Microgreens are becoming more popular because they are small, beautiful, and surprisingly easy to grow.
They do not require a large space, and for beginners, they can be one of the most approachable ways to start growing edible plants at home.

Still, many people get stuck at the same first question:
What do I actually need to begin?

Seeds, trays, growing medium, water, light — the list is not very long, but it can still feel confusing at first.
In this first article of the series, we will look at the basic things you need to start growing microgreens and sort out what is essential and what is simply helpful.

You can start with less than you think

One of the best things about microgreens is that you do not need a large garden or a complicated setup to begin.

Of course, if you want to grow them more seriously later, you can add shelves, lights, specialty trays, and other tools.
But at the beginner stage, that is not necessary.

What matters most at the beginning is not building a perfect system.
What matters is getting to your first successful cycle:

・sowing the seeds
・watching them germinate
・growing them to the right stage
・harvesting them
That means your first goal should be simple:
prepare enough to get started, not enough to build a professional farm.

The 5 basic things you need

At the most basic level, you need only five things to start growing microgreens:

・seeds
・a tray or container
・a growing medium
・water
・light
That is the foundation.

Everything else can come later.
If you understand these five elements, you already understand the basic structure of microgreen growing.

You need seeds because that is where everything begins.
You need a tray because the seeds need a place to grow.
You need a growing medium because the roots need support and moisture.
You need water because germination and growth depend on it.
And you need light because once the seeds sprout, healthy growth depends on enough brightness.

It is a simple system, but each part matters.

1. Seeds

Seeds are the starting point of every microgreen crop.

Many microgreens are simply common vegetable or herb seeds grown for a shorter time and harvested at a younger stage.
That sounds straightforward, but not all seeds feel equally easy for beginners.

At the start, it helps to choose seeds that are:

・quick to germinate
・airly even in growth
・easy to observe
・easy to harvest
The first time you grow microgreens, the most important thing is not to be unusual or advanced.
It is to learn the process clearly.

That is why beginner-friendly seeds are often better than rare or delicate ones.
You want something that helps you understand what healthy germination and steady growth look like.

In the next article, we will look more closely at how to choose seeds well.
For now, just remember that seeds are not all equal — and choosing easy ones at the beginning makes a big difference.

2. A tray or container

Microgreens do not need deep pots or large planters.

They grow well in shallow containers, which is one reason they are so beginner-friendly.
At this stage, you do not need to worry too much about buying a special tray right away.

What matters most is that the container is:

・shallow
・easy to handle
・wide enough for a small sowing area
・simple to observe every day
A tray is not just a place to hold the seeds.
It becomes the small environment where you watch moisture, germination, and growth.

For beginners, a practical container is usually better than an impressive one.
A setup that helps you notice changes easily is more useful than one that simply looks professional.

3. Growing medium

The growing medium is the material that supports the seeds and roots.

This does not always mean traditional soil.
In microgreen growing, the medium is simply the surface and structure that helps seeds germinate and helps roots stay moist and stable.

A good growing medium does a few important things:

・it gives seeds a place to rest evenly
・it holds enough moisture without becoming unmanageable
・it supports root growth
・it stays reasonably easy to handle
For beginners, the most useful growing medium is usually one that feels predictable.
You do not want something too extreme — not something that dries out too fast, and not something that stays too wet too easily.

At the beginning, the goal is not to master every growing medium.
The goal is to use one that helps you understand how moisture and growth behave in a simple, visible way.

We will go deeper into choosing growing media in Part 2.

4. Water

Water sounds simple, but it is one of the easiest parts to get wrong.

Microgreens need moisture to germinate and grow, but more water is not always better.
Too little can slow or stop growth.
Too much can lead to problems such as excess moisture, weak growth, or mold.

That is why water is not just a supply — it is part of your management.

At this stage, you do not need to memorize a perfect watering system.
What matters is understanding that water needs to be controlled, not just added.
As you grow, you will learn to notice whether the tray feels too dry, too wet, or reasonably balanced.

For beginners, this awareness is more important than precision.

5. Light

Once seeds germinate, light becomes essential for healthy development.

A common beginner question is whether a bright windowsill is enough or whether grow lights are necessary.
The answer depends on your space, the season, and how much natural light you get.

So the real question is not:
Do I have light?
It is:
Do I have enough useful light for healthy growth?

Microgreens do not always need a complex lighting setup at the beginning, but they do need an environment where they will not struggle from lack of brightness.

That is why it helps to think about light from the very start instead of treating it as an afterthought.
Even a simple setup works better when the growing location has been chosen with light in mind.

What is helpful, but not essential?

Once you have the five basics, you can already begin.

Still, there are a few extra items that can make things easier:

・a spray bottle
・small scissors
・a bottom tray or plate for support
・abels for different seed varieties
・simple cleaning tools
These are useful, but they are not what determines whether you can start.
It is better to begin with the basics, then add useful tools as your own needs become clearer.

That way, your setup grows naturally instead of becoming unnecessarily complicated from day one.

Do you need special equipment?

In most beginner cases, no.

You do not need an expensive indoor farming system to start learning microgreens.
You do not need to build a polished setup before your first tray.
And you do not need to solve every future problem before you have even sown your first seeds.

In fact, too much equipment too early can make the process feel heavier than it needs to be.

Microgreens are attractive partly because they allow you to start small.
It makes sense to protect that advantage.

The simpler your first setup is, the easier it will be to learn what really matters in your own environment.

Focus on being ready, not being perfect

For beginners, the real goal is not to create the perfect growing station.

The real goal is to create a setup that lets you begin.

If you have:

・seeds
・a tray
・a growing medium
・water
・light
then you are already much closer than you think.

That is enough for a first try.
And a first try is valuable, because once you go through one full cycle, many things become clearer:

・what kind of seeds you enjoy
・how your space behaves
・what feels easy or difficult
・what tools you may want later
Starting teaches faster than over-planning.

Conclusion

If you want to start growing microgreens, you do not need a large setup or expensive equipment.

At the beginner level, the essentials are simple:

・seeds
・a tray or container
・a growing medium
・water
・light
That is the basic system.

The most important thing is not making everything perfect from the start.
It is understanding what is truly necessary and getting yourself into a position where you can grow your first tray with confidence.

Microgreens are appealing because they are small, practical, and accessible.
So your first step should feel the same way.
